ABOUT DWIGHT BAIRD
Born and raised in Huntingdon, a small town southwest of Montreal, Canada, Dwight Baird specialized in watercolours for over twenty years and for the last fifteen years has been working in acrylics. Upon graduation with a diploma in Visual and Creative Arts from St. Lawrence College in Cornwall, Ontario, he worked briefly as a graphic artist and then spent two years traveling and painting in Europe. These travels resulted in his first two collections of works, "A Touch of Europe", in 1983 and, "There and Back Again'. in 1986.
During the past thirty years Baird has presented four additional series of paintings revolving around specific themes. The first, in 1989, entitled, "Newfoundland", featured fourteen large watercolours depicting life in Canada's easternmost province. Next came, "Carny-Midway", a collection of thirty paintings and sketches focusing on the sights, sounds and smells of amusement parks and the "carny" lifestyle.
In 1993 Baird turned to baseball and presented an extensive series of over fifty original pieces entitled." For the Love of the Game", which covered all aspects of The National Pastime. Following this exhibition the artist founded "The Show Posters" and published many images in lithograph and poster format which are now well known in both the United States and Canada. In 1992 he was commissioned by Major League Baseball to complete three illustrations for the Major League Baseball All-Star Program for an article on Fantasy Baseball Camps. In 1994, the cover concept for the Major League Baseball Program was taken from Baird's now classic image, "At the Twilight's Last Gleaming", which features a cropped image from neck to thigh of both National and American league players lined up for the pre-game National Anthem. The artist's Sports Collection continued to expand as he completed images featuring both Golf and Basketball and in 1999 he was commissioned by the NBA for the image," Twenty-nine Teams - One Dream", for the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue in New York. This image was published as an exclusive signed edition and featured players from all NBA teams lined up for the National Anthem.
The artist's next series, entitled," Night Vision", took five years to complete and featured over fifty watercolours and sketches exploring the theme of night, full moons and neon lights.. In 1995 the Baird was commissioned by the Montreal McCord Museum for an original watercolour to be used as the feature image for the exhibition, " Play Ball Montreal!". He was honoured in 2000 as a recipient of a Premiers Award, presented annually to graduates of Ontario colleges for outstanding accomplishment in a specific field of study (Visual Arts). For over the last ten years Baird, working in acrylics, has developed an exciting new style of contemporary realism - mixing the broad strokes of impressionism with specific detailed areas in his work. He has been working on an extensive series of pieces depicting daily life in Cuba, documenting a time in history which will never be seen again.
The artist exhibits in many of the most prestigious art festivals and has won numerous prizes for his work. Baird lives and works in Montreal.
