ABOUT DON ALEJANDRO ROBAINA

Vegas Robaina may have only been established as an official Habanos brand in 1997, however it would be hard to imagine the history of Cuban tobacco cultivation without the family behind this now well-known brand.

The late Don Alejandro Robaina came from a proud lineage of tobacco growers whose presence in the San Luis region of the Vuelta Abajo extends back to 1845. The astounding stewardship over the vegas’ (fields) of Chuchillas de Barbacao is proven by the fact that around 80% of each crop harvest is used as Habanos wrappers worthy of international export. This number is particularly impressive in comparison to the 35% average of the competing plantations.

Perhaps long-overdue, the Robaina legacy was recognized with their own brand in 1997, emerging as second of two younger lines created in the decade. The official launch took place on June 6 in Madrid, with Don Robaina at 78 years of age, in attendance at the lavish inauguration.

Well beyond a brand Don Robaina was a personification of the Cuban vegueros’ spirit, an incredibly sociable and endlessly hospitable man, his plantation a mandatory pit-stop for tourists and cigar aficionados the world over. Don Alejandro Robaina died on April 17, 2010 leaving an unshakeable legacy.

Don Alejandro Robaina passed away in 2010.
